The most common of the maiden ferns in the southeastern United States. The wood fern’s fronds gracefully arch in lovely shades of lime to medium green, creating a vibrant display. Each fern grows 2 to 3 feet high and 8 to 12 inches wide, and spread out in all directions from clusters of stalks along rhizomes. As winter approaches, they take on a beautiful bronze hue.

Wood ferns make a fantastic addition to any shade garden throughout the year, and they thrive particularly well in wetland and water garden habitats.

In regions west of east Texas, they’re affectionately referred to as River Ferns, as you can find them along or near bodies of water. Meanwhile, in the moist woods east of central Texas, they are known as Wood Ferns.
