Also known as Mexican Feathergrass, Mexican Wiregrass, Finestem Needlegrass, Ponytail Grass, Texas Tussock
Mexican Feathergrass is a perennial grass characterized by its delicate texture and clumping growth. It is native to the open, rocky scrublands and forested slopes of the mountainous Trans-Pecos region in Texas, extending west to southern New Mexico and as far south as central Mexico. The slender, upright leaves are light green and change to a golden brown in winter.
For optimal growth, plant in well-draining, sandy, rich loams that are evenly moist to dry, and in locations with full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate rocky and clayey soils, excessive moisture should be avoided. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and may enter dormancy during summer droughts. Trim back foliage in late winter before new growth begins in spring. This grass readily spreads by seed under suitable conditions.
