Baccharis x ‘Starn’ Thompson
Commonly known as Thomson Broom, Prostrate Coyote Bush, Prostrate Coyotebrush, and Dwarf Chaparral Bush.
This mounding evergreen shrub is effective as a long-lived, low-maintenance shrub when planted in masses. It has very small, leathery green leaves closely set along the stems. Baccharis plants are separately sexed and this patented selection is a male clone. The inconspicuous male flowers do not produce messy pappus (seed fluff) and prevent unwanted seedlings. A hybrid between B. sarothroides and B. pilularis (both native to southwestern U.S.).
Tolerates extreme and reflected heat. Drought tolerant once established, but benefits from watering in the summer. Plant in full sun. Tolerates a lot of different soil types, but does best in neutral to basic and needs good drainage. Avoid pruning during hot summer months and sheer in early fall.
