Texas Sotol is a charming, evergreen desert perennial, often confused with yucca, native to hot, dry areas of Texas and Mexico. It forms a 2′-3′ tall rosette of long, narrow, leathery bluish-green leaves. Its striking flower stalk can reach heights of 8 feet, and atop this stalk, stands a beautiful spike of yellowish flowers that stretches 2-3′ high. They will typically send up flower stalks only once every few years. When these flowers are in bloom, they attract hummingbirds and bees.
During dry spells, the trunks open up, creating cozy access for wildlife to explore the spongy interior and the lush leaf bases.
Provide excellent drainage. Prefers rocky or sandy, limestone based soil. Water deeply, regularly to establish root system. Once established, water during extreme dry spells. Remove spent flowers as needed. Mineral or rock mulches are better than organic mulches to allow air to the roots.
