Little Bluestem ‘Chameleon’ is a delightful native ornamental grass that truly stands out with its variegated foliage. Little Bluestem, from which ‘Chameleon’ was cultivated, is native to many parts of the US, where it grows in prairies, fields, and along roadsides. Little Bluestem ‘Chameleon’ provides lovely green and white hues in spring and early summer, and as late summer and fall approach, the colors transform into vibrant purples and reds, beautifully accented by maroon flowers. These flowers later transition into tawny seedheads which last all winter.
This grass is wonderfully tolerant of heat and humidity, thriving in nearly any type of soil, especially in those poor, well-drained varieties. This selection of little bluestem was discovered by French nurseryman Thierry Delabroye as a seedling of Schizachyrium scoparium ‘The Blues’.
