Leucophyllum frutescens x laevigatum ‘Heavenly Cloud’
Leucophyllum frutescens, often lovingly referred to as Texas sage, silver leaf, or barometer bush, is a delightful shrub that usually grows compactly but with a relaxed, loosely branched form, reaching heights of 5 to 8 feet. As it ages, if left unpruned, this charming plant tends to spread out a bit. It’s a native gem of the Chihuahuan Desert, thriving on rocky limestone slopes where calcareous soils abound. You can find it in the beautiful regions of northern Mexico, Texas, and New Mexico.
Heavenly Cloud is a wonderful hybrid formed from Chihuahuan Sage (Leucophyllum laevigatum) and Green Texas Sage (Leucophyllum frutescens). It typically matches Green Texas Sage in mature size, but it has a slightly narrower growth habit. It’s average mature height is 6′ tall, but some have reached heights of 8′ tall. With its dark green leaves, which are more refined than those of Green Cloud and more similar to the leaves of Chihuahuan Sage, it creates a beautiful backdrop for the stunning lavender flowers that bloom in response to humidity and rain. Heavenly Cloud is one of the first Texas Rangers to burst into bloom, presenting eye-catching purple flowers that draw in many pollinators.
This selection is happiest when basking in full sun in well draining soil. Tolerant of reflective heat. Mostly evergreen and it requires minimal pruning.
