Pavonia braziliensis

Common Names: Brazilian Rock Rose

Just like our lovely Native pink Rock Rose (Pavonia lasiopetala), this wonderful species is a cousin to the tropical hibiscus, but it’s even better at handling drought and cold. To really thrive, Brazilian Rock Roses love full sun, reaching up to 3 feet in height and 4 feet wide. If they find themselves in shade, they might be a bit smaller, but they’ll still bloom beautifully. With their soft, almost white, pink petals, and striking deep magenta centers, these charming flowers will invite countless butterflies and hummingbirds into your garden.

Brazilian rock roses are great companions for rocky soil, making them perfect for gardens along rocky roadsides or for those fabulous xeriscaped gardens filled with decomposed granite or gravelly materials.

In mild climates, Brazilian Rock Rose stays evergreen, while in cooler areas, it will drop its leaves in winter. There’s no need to shear it down for winter, but a little light pruning in early spring will help it grow bushier and less leggy. Giving the plants a gentle prune during the growing season will encourage those stunning little flowers to pop up more abundantly.
