English laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub that reaches 6–20 ft tall depending on cultivar, with glossy dark-green oblong leaves and fragrant white spring racemes—ideal for dense hedges, screens, or foundation plantings in the Willamette Valley. It tolerates sun to deep shade and a range of soils when kept evenly moist, prefers well-drained loam, responds well to regular pruning, but note that leaves and fruit contain cyanogenic compounds (toxic if ingested) and wet winters in western Oregon can favor leaf spot or powdery mildew, so choose resistant cultivars and site with good air circulation.
