Cotinus obovatus

The American smoke tree, scientifically known as Cotinus obovatus, is a charming deciduous tree that hails from Texas. It can reach a height of 20-30 feet, and often has the shape of a lovely upright shrub. Although its name might suggest otherwise, the smoke tree isn’t named after its small yellowish-green flowers that bloom in June. Instead, it earns its name from the fluffy, billowy hairs that transform into a dreamy smoky pink to purplish hue during the summer. These delightful strands are attached to elongated stalks on the faded flower clusters, giving the tree its enchanting, soft appearance.

The species’ name highlights the beauty of its bluish-green leaves, which resemble an inverted egg. In the fall, the foliage puts on a spectacular display of colors—think yellow, red, orange, and stunning reddish-purple—creating some of the most breathtaking autumn scenery among native American trees and shrubs.
