Also known as Zizotes Milkweed, Hierba De Zizotes, Side-cluster Milkweed, Longhorn Milkweed, Primrose Milkweed, Lindheimer’s Milkweed
A native milkweed found in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. It has unique, but inconspicuous white flowers with long, slender hoods that elegantly extend beyond the stigmatic groove, flaring or bowing at the top. In bright sunlight, the upper leaves take on a lovely purple hue. Populations of this plant tend to be low in density and scattered, which makes it quite a hidden gem among milkweeds.
A host plant for the Monarch Butterfly caterpillar and the flowers are a nectar source for a variety of pollinators. All plants in the Asclepias genus are toxic to both humans other animals. However, they are crucial to Monarch Butterflies.
It flourishes in full sun and adapts well to sandy, dry soils. Requires little water once established. Even though it has shallow roots, it’s resilient, surviving periodic droughts and occasional mowing.
