Yellow Bells, also commonly known as Esperanza, naturally thrives across a vast range, from south Texas to Arizona, extending southward through Mexico and Central America to northern Argentina, as well as in southern Florida and much of the Caribbean. This variety is native to the southwestern US and nearby Mexico. There have been a lot of new Tecoma hybrids hitting the market lately, and while many of them claim to be improvements on bloom color and production, none of them can match the drought tolerance or cold hardiness of the native Yellow Bells.
A delightful deciduous shrub with an irregular shape, typically reaching heights of 3 to 6 feet in the U.S. (can grow to 9′ in tropical regions). This attractive plant showcases multiple stems and slender, upright branches adorned with striking clusters of large, trumpet-like yellow flowers, providing a stunning contrast to its lance-shaped, olive-green foliage. Long, slender seed pods appear in fall.

This variety is quite hardy and can survive freezing temperatures, though they will die back to the ground to reemerge in spring. Yellow Bells flourish in arid climates and are well-adapted to monsoon patterns that feature dry periods in between. To help them flower beautifully, try to mimic these conditions in your landscape by watering deeply but allowing the ground to dry out between waterings. Remove young seed pods to promote re-blooming. Prune heavily in late winter or early spring after freeze threats have passed. Needs well-draining soil, preferably a rocky mix. Well-suited for pot cultivation, provided the containers are at least 12 inches wide and deep.
