Dalea candida, commonly called White Prairie Clover, is a delicate looking but quite hardy perennial that naturally occurs in sandy, rocky, or clayey soils in prairies in open woods all through Texas and much of North America. Tiny white flowers in dense, cylindrical heads bloom atop erect, slender stems in summer Flowers bloom bottom to top, forming a dense ruff that slowly moves up the flower head. This is a nitrogen-fixing plant, making it a great companion plant for many vegetables. Native Americans have used the roots for food and the leaves for teas.
Attracts birds and butterflies. Larval host plant for the Dogface butterfly.
Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Can tolerate light shade in Texas and other states with intense sunlight. Thick and deep taproot enables this plant to tolerate drought well once established, however does best with some watering in summer. Will self-seed in optimum growing conditions.
