Texas Grama forms small, distinct clumps which have just a few slender stems with smooth, dark nodes. Its leaves are very thin, short, and taper to a sharp point. They are crowded at the base and often wavy or curling at maturity. When it blooms, it has spreading bell-shaped seeds that are purplish, drying to a wheat color. Its seeds are distributed along a spike above the leaves. It thrives in open sunny areas with good drainage. Supplemental water is not required once the grass is established, but will help to maintain the grass’s green color if desired through the summer. It provides seed for birds, and is a larval host for Branded Skipper Butterflies and Satyr Butterflies.
