It is known for its thick, crunchy leaves with a sweet flavor, sometimes described as a cross between romaine and butter lettuce. Sucrine is also recognized for its heat tolerance and resistance to bolting, making it suitable for extended harvest. It can be sown directly outdoors or started indoors. Companion plants include alliums, radish, marigold, beans, beets, carrots, nasturtiums, dill, corn, cucurbits, cilantro, and strawberries. Avoid planting near cabbage, Brussels sprouts, celery, and parsley. Harvest can begin at the young leaf stage, but flavor improves after cool nights. Leaf varieties are more cold tolerant.
