Shorbeak Sedge exhibits thin, green, grass-like leaves and grows in clumps. Its common names refer to the rather short, oval-shaped seed heads that it produces in late summer. By fall, these seed heads turn an attractive golden-brown. It spreads slowly by short rhizomes and self-seeding, naturalizing without becoming aggressive.
Shortbeak Sedge is hardy and can be grown in a range of moisture and lighting conditions. Unlike many sedges, this species performs well in dry soil and full sun. However, it can also adapt to wetlands and seasonally flooded sites. Can be used for help with erosion control.
