Muhlenbergia reverchonii, often called seep muhly, is a lovely perennial bunch grass celebrated for its stunning foliage and charming fall flowers. You can find it thriving on rocky slopes, flats, limestone outcroppings, and seep areas, stretching from central Oklahoma to central Texas.
This grass showcases beautifully tufted, thread-like green leaves that arch gracefully in a basal clump, reaching heights and widths of up to 2 feet. In August, delightful masses of open inflorescences rise above the clump, showcasing soft clouds of pink flowers, which are followed by attractive seed heads that linger long into the fall. As winter approaches, the seed plumes and foliage turn a lovely tawny brown, with old basal sheaths forming a unique fibrous mass at the edges of the clump.
This grass flourishes in full sun in sandy or rocky soils, whether they are dry to medium moisture. It stands up well to heat, humidity, and drought, though it tends to grow taller with consistent moisture. It’s also quite resilient in poor soils. It may self-seed beautifully in your garden! Interestingly, despite its native growing range, this species boasts better winter hardiness, tolerating temperatures down to USDA Zone 5, compared to many other species of Muhlenbergia.
