The oldest cool-season crops, dating back 6000 years, originated in Europe / Siberia area. Burgundy coloured 2” leaves heirloom leafy green. Often used as an alternative to spinach. It is less bitter and more savoury flavour when cooked or each fresh. Also called mountain spinach. It can be grown in summer and won’t seed easily.

Companion plants: Brassicas, Lettuce, Peas, Leek, Beans, Tomato, Eggplant, Pepper, Strawberry.
Planting tip: Soaking in warm water for up to 12H is recommended for improved germination. Sow seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before last frost or||direct sow outside early spring.
Harvesting tip: Young leaves can be harvested right away. Tender leaves will come in the early- to mid-summer months. Frost tolerant.
Storage tip: Store fresh leaves in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Blanch and freeze for longer storage. Dry leaves can be stored in airtight containers.
