Heuchera are popular in both native and mainstream gardening, where they are commonly named Coral Bells, and have been cultivated for color variety. They have a tidy clump-forming growth habit appropriate for formal gardens. One of the original wild types from which so many cultivars were developed, prairie alumroot has scalloped, heart-shaped foliage. Native to the northwest and central U.S. and Canada, it is often evergreen in Texas, and well suited for shady spots.
This perennial herb adapts to many conditions, but does best with well draining soils. Its shallow root system also makes it a good candidate for planters and container gardens. Drought tolerant in its native range.
