Phlox divaricata ‘Mary Helen’ Common Name: Woodland Phlox. Zones 4 to 8. Full sun to part shade. Mature size: 12 to 15 inch high, spreads 12 to 20 inches; upright habit herbaceous perennial.
Magenta streaked purple flowers bloom April through June. Green, lance shaped leaves grow into a spreading, flowing plant. Phlox divaricata can form large colonies over time as leafy shoots spread along the ground rooting at the nodes.
Native Range: from Pennsylvania to South Dakota to the Gulf of Mexico.
‘Mary Helen’ grows well in moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil. Rich, moist, organic soil and mulch are beneficial as it is intolerant of drought, but it will grow well in average conditions.
