Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) forms tall, vase-shaped plumes of feathery green fronds that create an elegant, textural focal point in shady, damp borders or along streams. Well-suited to the Willamette Valley’s cool, moist sites, this hardy, colony-forming fern spreads by rhizomes in rich, consistently moist soil—plant in part to full shade for low-maintenance growth, seasonal dieback, and attractive spring fiddleheads.
