Agastache mexicana ‘summerlong lemon’
Agastache mexicana, known as the Mexican giant hyssop, is a herbaceous perennial that shines in its native Mexico, thriving in oak forests at elevations around 8,000 feet in central Mexico. These mature plants can grow about 2 to 3 feet tall and spread just as wide. Their attractive lanceolate to narrowly ovate leaves reach lengths of 1 to 3 inches and widths of 0.75 to 1.5 inches. From mid-summer to early fall, you’ll be captivated by the bright yellow blooms arranged in delightful, dense whorls called verticillasters at the tips of the stems. These flowers bring beauty to your garden and draw in hummingbirds and other delightful pollinators. Plus, the leaves offer a lovely fragrance reminiscent of lemon and anise, adding another layer of charm. Among the varieties, ‘Balsumlem’ is a compact selection of the Mexican giant hyssop, flaunting cheerful, bright yellow blooms. Mature plants reach heights of 1.25 to 2 feet with a similar spread. You can often find this variety at nurseries and garden centers under the cheerful name SUMMERLONG LEMON.
For the best growth, this plant loves well-draining soil that can stay evenly moist to dry. It thrives in full sun to part shade and is hardy in Zones 6-10. Once it has established itself, it shows resilience to heat and drought, making it an excellent addition to your garden.
