Primarily grown for its rosettes of glossy burgundy leaves that turn to deep purple in summer, then red in the fall. Vertical spikes of tubular flowers rise above the foliage in late spring to early summer. A good substitution for non-native Ajuga.
A hardy and low-maintenance perennial that thrives in well-drained soils. Well suited for average to poor soils, including sand or clay compositions. Once established is relatively drought-tolerant. Forms clumps and spreads through self-seeding.
