Leavenworth’s Texas Sedge is an attractive, evergreen, fine-textured clump-forming sedge. Sprays of flowers are produced in mid-to-late April on long, wiry stems that tend to lean soon after they finish blooming. The plants eventually grow a flush of new foliage from their crowns that fills out the form of the plant by July. In the wild, Leavenworth’s sedge grows in dry, open woodlands but has proven to be quite tolerant and adaptable to the average garden soils. More drought tolerant than other sedges.
These plants provide erosion control and winter interest, and are appropriate for Deer Resistant Plantings, Low Maintenance Plantings, Restoration Projects and Wildlife Gardens. This sedge is an excellent native substitute for the popular Asian groundcovers Liriope muscari and Ophiopogon japonicus.
