Some plants behave; this one performs. ‘Big Twister’ sends up thick green stems that coil and spiral as though they had second thoughts about growing straight. Each stem twists differently, forming a living sculpture that looks at home beside water, stone, or a plain clay pot on a porch step. Children stare at it. Adults touch it. Few plants invite curiosity the way this one does.
Despite its odd appearance, it is a very durable native rush. Unlike most garden perennials, it actually prefers constant moisture and tolerates standing water. Where other plants rot, this one settles in comfortably. In warm climates it remains evergreen, and even in winter the corkscrew stems keep their structure long after flowers are gone.
It works equally well in formal containers or natural pond margins, giving height and interest without flowers or fuss.
