Old heirloom of the 1800s of loose-leaf lettuce varieties that is hands down best tasting. Developed by Peter Henderson & Co. of New York in 1879. Bright green and crumpled lettuce that is sweet and tender tasting. Leaf varieties are more cold tolerant.

Companion plants: Alliums, Radish, Marigold, Broccoli, Beans, Beet, Carrot, Nasturtium, Dill, Corn, Cucurbits, Cilantro, Strawberries. 
Far from: Cabbage, Brussel Sprouts, Celery, Parsley.
Planting tip: Direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked. Can also start indoors 3-4 weeks ahead of planting. Most won’t germinate well above 25°C except a few heat-tolerant varieties.||
Harvesting tip: Harvest anytime but flavor is best in fall after a few cold nights.
Storage tip: Can be stored in sand in root cellar at ~1-2°C.
