Originated in western Africa. 3-4′ branched plants produce hundreds of round ½-¾” shiny black berries in clusters. Harvest after berries turn from glossy to dull black. Tasteless when raw and unsweetened, but makes delicious mock blueberry pies and preserves.
Garden Huckleberry seeds are started indoors around the same ?me
as tomato seeds. Transplant out in mid-May to June, with your
tomato seedlings. The small, 1cm (1/2″) fruits begin to set early,
turning from bright green to jet black. These hold on the plant, even
if they appear early in the season.

Planting tip: Seeds are planted indoors at around the same time as tomato seeds.||Transplant them in mid-May or June, along with your tomato plants. Harvesting tip: Harvest when berries are fully ripe and deep colored. Berries should detach easily. Wild huckleberries ripen over several weeks.
Storage tip: Refrigerate for up to 1 week. Freeze or dry berries for longer storage.
