Taurine is an amino acid that aids in cardiac function, eye health, fights obesity, inproves immune system function, supports reproductive health, reduces seizure symptoms and defends the liver against damage from free radicals. As many of you already know, it is believed that low levels of Taurine leads to a diagnosis of Dialated Cardiomyopathy. Taurine in both humans and dogs can be produced from other amino acids whereas cats are unable to synthesize Taurine from other food ingredients and must get it from their diet. That said, dog breeds that are predisposed to DCM include Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards, English Setters, Dalmatians, Portuguese Water Dogs, and English Bulldogs. Despite a raw fed diet typically having abundant amounts of Taurine, I still always make sure to include hearts when doing my personal homemade grinds for my animals.
