Annual phlox, also known as Drummond’s Phlox, is a delightful annual plant that typically grows to a charming height of 6-12 inches, but it can reach up to 20 inches! Its flowers burst with color in shades such as pink, red, white, peach, or lavender, often featuring a lovely pale center. Each 1-inch bloom is trumpet-shaped with a short, narrow tube, creating beautiful clusters that catch the eye. The leaves are soft, hairy, and have a slightly sticky texture.
If the seasons are a bit dry, be sure to give your phlox a drink of water in the fall, winter, and spring. After going to seed, the plant naturally dies back, so consider planting it alongside summer and/or fall-blooming wildflowers for a stunning garden display. And just like with all annuals, letting your phlox reseed will ensure a vibrant showcase for the following year.
