Liatris is a lovely tall perennial plant that creates beautiful clumps in moist lowlands, meadows, and marshes. Its fluffy, rounded white flower heads sit gracefully atop sturdy, leafy stalks. At the base, you’ll find a charming tuft of narrow, medium-green leaves, which give way to smaller leaves as the stem rises. This delightful plant blooms in summer, showcasing fluffy disk flowers that twinkle like “blazing stars.” Many people affectionately call Liatris gayfeather because of its feathery flower tops.
To thrive, Liatris loves full sun and well-drained soil. While it can manage in less-than-perfect soils, it truly flourishes in moist, fertile ones, outperforming its relatives when the soil’s just right! Keep in mind that Liatris doesn’t do well in soggy winter conditions, but it handles summer heat and humidity like a champ. Even though you can grow it from seed, be patient, as Liatris takes a little time to settle in.
